A Naturally Occurring Solution for Varroa Control
Oxalic acid is a naturally occurring organic acid found in many plants, including spinach, rhubarb and sorrel, and is also present naturally in small amounts in honey. It has become one of the world’s most widely used treatments for Varroa destructor because it provides effective mite control when applied at the correct stage of the brood cycle.
Unlike many synthetic miticides, there is currently no documented scientific evidence that Varroa mites have developed resistance to oxalic acid. A 2024 systematic review covering more than 30 years of published research found no robust evidence of resistance developing, making oxalic acid an important tool in an integrated Varroa management program.
Because oxalic acid acts differently from conventional chemical miticides, researchers believe it is far more difficult for mites to develop resistance. While ongoing monitoring continues, oxalic acid remains one of the most trusted and sustainable treatment options available to beekeepers worldwide.
Benefits of Oxalic Acid Vaporisation
- Effective control of phoretic (adult) Varroa mites.
- Leaves minimal residue in honey and beeswax when used correctly.
- Suitable for use as part of an integrated Varroa management strategy.
- Quick application with minimal disturbance to the colony.
- Ideal for use during brood breaks when treatment effectiveness is highest.
For best results, treatments are generally carried out during periods of minimal brood, such as:
- Late autumn and winter
- After swarming
- Following re-queening
- During natural brood breaks
Always follow local regulations and wear appropriate personal protective equipment when handling oxalic acid.
Simple to Use
- Fit your compatible 18V battery.
- Fill the dispenser with the required amount of oxalic acid.
- Allow the unit to heat until the ready indicator is displayed.
- Insert the vaporiser into the hive entrance or treatment port.
- Activate the treatment cycle.
- Move to the next hive once the cycle is complete.
The cordless design makes moving between hives fast and efficient, particularly in remote apiaries where mains power is unavailable.
